QR code photo booth: guests keep photos on their phone
Updated · 5 min read
Quick answer
A QR code photo booth shows a code on screen after each session. The guest scans it with their phone camera and the photo strip opens on their own phone, ready to save or share. With stripmem this needs no app, no sign-up and no event Wi-Fi.
How does a QR code photo booth work?
The booth takes the photos, then shows a QR code that points to that guest's strip.
- The guest takes three photos at the booth. Each pose has a countdown and a prompt.
- The booth builds the photo strip with the chosen frame and filter.
- The guest reviews the strip. They can retake it, and tap "Keep it" when they are happy. Nothing is uploaded until then.
- A QR code appears on the booth screen for about a minute.
- The guest opens their phone camera and points it at the code.
- A link appears. Tapping it opens the strip on their phone, where they can tap "Save to my phone" or "Share with the crew".
That is all. The guest never installs an app or creates an account. See the free iPad photo booth guide if you are still setting up the booth itself.
Do guests need an app or Wi-Fi?
No app, and no event Wi-Fi. Guests use their phone's built-in camera, and the link opens over whatever connection their phone already has, including mobile data.
This saves you from handing out a Wi-Fi password at a party or venue with spotty coverage. The booth device is the only thing that needs a working internet connection.
Why use QR codes instead of printing?
Photos land on the phone guests already have, with nothing to print, hand out or throw away.
- No printer, paper or ink to buy, jam or run out of.
- No line waiting for prints: guests walk away with their photos.
- Guests can post or send the strip right away.
- Nothing to collect at the end of the night.
What does the guest see on their phone?
The finished strip, with the frame and filter you picked, plus "Save to my phone" and "Share with the crew" buttons.
Because the strip opens in the phone's browser, on an iPhone guests can press and hold the photo, then tap Add to Photos (or tap "Save to my phone", which opens the share sheet, then Save Image), or send it straight to friends and group chats. Nothing is installed and no account is created along the way, so even guests who are wary of apps can join in without hesitation.
What happens to the photos?
They are temporary. The link works for a short time (15 minutes by default), and the photo is deleted within 48 hours.
stripmem does not use face recognition and has no permanent gallery, so tell guests to save their strip as soon as it opens. Read the privacy policy for the details.
How do I make the QR step go smoothly?
Keep the screen steady and bright, and leave guests a moment to scan.
- Set the tablet's brightness high enough that the QR code is easy to read, and avoid glare from windows or lamps.
- Have guests hold their phone steady a foot or so from the screen, and keep the camera pointed at the whole code.
- Put the booth where people have room to stand while they scan, not in a doorway.
- Guests have about a minute to scan before the booth resets, so have them scan right away.
- Tell the group at the start: when the code appears, scan it and save the photo.
- If a camera app does not read the code, try a different phone or use its built-in scanner.
What do I need to run one?
A tablet or laptop with a camera, a stand and some light. Open stripmem.com/booth and you are running. For stands, lighting and props, see the DIY party photo booth guide.
